Be vewy vewy quiet...

Be still, and know that I am God... (Psalm 46:10)
Being still is a learned skill, especially in these times we are living. Our eyes are bombarded with images on a constant basis with things to eat, do, watch, play, hear, whatever. On top of that, most of these things require money. To make money, you better be moving, especially in a slow economy.

I sold my PlayStation, unhooked my cable from the TV and only turn it on to watch an occasional movie with my wife.  Even then, I have to practice stillness regularly. Generally I find my mind easiest to tame in the mornings, before all the neurons are firing to accomplish my days tasks.

But why is this stillness so important?  Have you ever tried talking to someone playing a video game? They stare at the screen and may give you a mumble in response, but chances are they are not paying attention. God would not tell us to "Shut up!" unless He had something to say to us. I think most people who think God doesn't speak today probably don't realize that if they would stop and listen, they would hear Him.

I spent two decades convinced that I could not hear Him, and I did everything I could to get Him to say something to me. In fact, I spent so much time complaining about not hearing Him, that I am sure He couldn't get a word in edgewise anyway.

The fact is, I think He wants to talk to us, not to tell us what to do, but to just be with us, to love us, to father us, to inspire us.  Why would we not want to shut up for a bit and connect to Him?
